A new version of the book is out, where I updated the examples with NetLogo 7. I also added a chapter on opinion dynamics and voting, and a chapter on using AI for agent-based modeling. This latter topic is rapidly developing, and I just put a number of pointers to relevant work going on, and some of my thoughts on generative agent-based modeling. I look forward to your views.

New tutorials

Hereby some recommended new tutorials to learn programming in NetLogo. The first one is from the NetLogo team. It provides a beginner’s guide to NetLogo programming. The other tutorial is a Netlogo tutorial that will allow you to create a Games of Thrones ABM. It uses a series of steps to include new components to a basic models.

New version out

A new version of the book is out in time for the Fall semester!

Due to requests to have the book available on multiple types of devices, we reimplemented the book with PressBooks, which now allow it not to be restricted to Apple devices. We also made some editing corrections and improved some of the images.

Why is social distancing so effective?

An interesting article in the Washington Post demonstrates with a simple agent-based model why doing nothing to the coronavirus leads to exponential growth of cases. Agents move randomly around and spread the disease. They also provide animations of scenarios where a percentage of the population is not moving anymore (socially distancing by staying at home as much as possible). This leads to a dramatic flattening of the curve. So stay put as much as possible.
